We haven't seen many ARB awnings mounted on Xterras so we thought we'd share how we mounted ours. Scouring the forums for hours we finally came across one that seemed like it would be inexpensive (not needing to buy overpriced mounts or new roof rack) and solid enough for off-road use. Basically, the mount uses 3 L brackets and 3 muffler clamps, along with the hardware that came with the awning. FYI, the awning is an ARB 2000 awning.

Our story begins with some friends, their dog, and our rig, Jax. Jax is our silver 2005 Nissan Xterra, which you will get to know later on in the story. Anyway, the plan was to go to Southern Vermont to an abandoned ski hill where we would camp out overnight on the summit. Friday: Our friends, Corey, Diana, and their dog Cash, set out on the weekend of adventure in their lifted Jeep Wrangler Unlimited on Friday, a day ahead of us. Corey planned the trip and received directions to the ski hill from fellow overlanders. Sadly, we weren’t going to head out until Saturday morning.  When deciding on what rig to buy, we researched all of the usual suspects; Jeep, Toyota, Land Rover, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Subaru, etc. We finally we landed on the Xterra because it would give us the most bang for the buck and could go anywhere the others could. It was surprising how much the other brands were selling for with no major benefits other than the name/popularity. People wanted way more than the vehicles were worth and they were all rusted through to the core or had major issues. Don’t get us wrong, we love the Jeeps (used to own a Wrangler), Yotas, and Landys, but the extra costs didn’t provide any more features we needed.  One winter day sitting around, probably watching Game of Thrones or some other addicting show I tend to be watching on a weeknight, I get a text from my neighbor, Corey. Thinking it was the usual comedic gif or epic off-road vehicle, it wasn’t. He wanted to know if I want to go on a Beer Safari (June 2015). Beer, trucks, beer, in Vermont – sounds good to me.  |
